January 24, 2003 Purdue's literary journal sponsors writing workshops WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Staff members for Purdue University's literary journal "Sycamore Review" have teamed up with the Purdue English department and the Tippecanoe Country Public Library to offer free writing classes for adults and children. The first Looseleaf Writing Workshop, entitled "Word Paintings," will take place from 2-3 p.m. Sunday (1/26) at the Tippecanoe County Public Library. Donald Platt, associate professor of poetry at Purdue, will instruct adults on art-inspired writing. Future class dates and topics include: Sunday, Feb. 9 ‹ "Make Your Own Book (And Fill it Too)" will be offered from 2-3 p.m. for children ages 8-12. Neal Gill, "Sycamore Review" managing editor, and Rebecca Bednarz, "Sycamore Review" art director, will assist children in making simple book designs. Sunday, Feb. 23 ‹ "Magic in the Mundane." Sara Lamers, a creative writing graduate assistant, will instruct adults from 2-3 p.m. on how to write poetry based on ordinary acts in everyday lives.
