Student leaders to be rewarded with scholarship opportunities

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University students with leadership skills can earn scholarships worth as much as $4,000 for the 2003-04 school year.

Applications are now being accepted for the Class of 1937 Scholarships, which are awarded to undergraduate students who have shown evidence of leadership ability. Students also must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher. Eligibility for financial aid is not a requirement, although financial need is considered by the scholarship committee.

The committee has sought to award at least 10 scholarships each year since 1987, when the class of 1937 established its endowment. Scholarship amounts range from $500 to $4,000. Last year, 23 students received scholarships which totaled $39,000.

Lou Ann Hamilton, Class of 1937 Scholarship Program Committee chairperson, says she looks forward to awarding the scholarships each year.

"I am really just amazed each year at how much time students here at Purdue spend doing for others," Hamilton says. "This generation truly cares about the world around them."

Hamilton says the committee tries to award scholarships to students at each academic level. Previous applicants and scholarship recipients are eligible to apply.

Applications are available at the Office of the Dean of Students in Schleman Hall, Room 207; the Purdue Student Government office in Stewart Center, Room G-6; and the Black Cultural Center, 1100 Third St. Applications must be submitted to the Office of the Dean of Students by Monday, March 3. For more information, students can access the scholarship committee's Web site.

Completed applications must include a list of leadership activities, along with a one-page essay on how the student has made a significant contribution to an activity or group. Scholarship winners will be notified by Friday, April 11.
