Hicks, who died Dec. 20 at age 81, served Purdue for more than 40 years and had a major impact on Indiana higher education. He was senior vice president emeritus, served for many years as the university's liaison with the state of Indiana and was an emeritus professor of agricultural economics. The undergraduate library at West Lafayette was named for Hicks, as was the baseball field at Purdue North Central.

Speakers at the memorial service will include university President Martin C. Jischke; Steven C. Beering, Purdue president emeritus; Robert L. Ringel, professor in audiology and speech sciences; and former executive vice president for academic affairs; Margaret Moan Rowe, vice provost for academic affairs; W. Wayne Townsend and D. William Moreau Jr., members of the Purdue Board of Trustees; and a member of the Hicks family. Comments from Arthur G. Hansen, president emeritus, also will be read during the event.

"This will be a chance to celebrate John's life in the same spirit of joy with which he lived it," said Joseph L. Bennett, vice president of university relations. "It will also be an opportunity for the university community to remember a man who gave so much of his life and energy to Purdue, and who was, and always will be, a Purdue University legend."
