School of Veterinary Medicine awards thousands in scholarships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine has awarded privately funded scholarships to more than 110 students in the doctor of veterinary medicine and veterinary technology degree programs for the 2002-03 academic year.

The scholarships, totaling more than $235,000, were provided by more than 40 donors. The support comes from a combination of annual gifts and scholarship endowments.

Alan H. Rebar, dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine, says he is pleased so many students were able to receive monetary support for their career development.

"As the financial climate for higher education continues to change, this support becomes ever more important, enabling us to ensure that those students most likely to succeed in our profession have access to a veterinary education," Rebar said. "Though the need for additional funding continues to be very great, this level of support is a tremendous encouragement."

Rebar noted that the doctor of veterinary medicine program is the most expensive degree offered at Purdue University. Its students graduate with an average educational debt of $50,000.

The students who received scholarships were honored along with the scholarship donors at a special recognition program in the Lynn Hall of Veterinary Medicine, followed by a reception at the dean's home.
