December 14, 2002 Purdue trustees approve housing fees for 2003-2004WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue undergraduate students living in university residences will pay an average of 5.7 percent more during the next academic year under a rate plan approved today (Saturday, 12/14) by the board of trustees. The new room and board rate schedule gives undergraduate students living in University Residences a variety of options, with the average cost being $6,024 per year for a double room and 15 meals a week. Monthly rates for students living in the Hawkins and Young halls will range from $320 for a double room to $435 for a single room. Purdue Village residents will have six options, ranging from a one-bedroom apartment for $478 to $596 for a two-bedroom unit. All rates include utilities, telephone with call-waiting and voice mail, and a cable television hookup in each room with access to 37 channels. Select areas also have air conditioning. Marvis J. Boscher, executive director of University Residences, said included in the overall rate increase is a 2 percent increase for major projects, such as the Cary Quadrangle renovation that began in 2000 and the 10-year plan for the installation of sprinklers in all residence halls by 2010. University Residences is self-supporting and does not receive any state funds or general student revenues. "The local housing market is very competitive, yet we continue to appeal to customers because of our value-added features," Boscher said. "We offer a student-focused community with a great location. Staff support is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Learning Communities, mediation services, wireless access in all areas and security policies enhance the student environment." Purdue's housing and food service fees rank fifth among Big Ten universities, and Boscher said she expects the ranking will not change. Students living in undergraduate housing again will be able to choose from three meal plans: 20, 15 or 10 meals a week. The average undergraduate room with the 20-meal-per-week plan will cost $6,496. A student who selects 10 meals per week will pay an average of $5,758 for annual room and board. A new block meal plan of 25 meals for $150 will be available to any student without a board plan. "We think this new option will appeal to students living in the apartments and Hawkins or Young," Boscher said. "Faculty and staff or off-campus students also may purchase the block meal plan." Approximately 12,000 undergraduate students live in 13 traditional housing units and two apartment complexes at Purdue. Purdue has the largest residence hall system in the country that promotes student choice by not requiring residency.
