Appointments and promotions

– Reid Riccardi has accepted the position of director of development for student services. He was the former director for class gifts and reunion giving in the Office of Annual Giving.

– Jenny Pratt has accepted the position of director of reunion giving in the Office of Annual Giving. Pratt was the former associate director of young alumni giving in the Office of Annual Giving.

– Shelly Opperman has accepted the position of associate director of president's council. Opperman previously served as associate director in the Office of Annual Giving.

– Audra Brickner has accepted the position of director of development in mechanical engineering. Brickner was the former manager of the telefund in annual giving.

– Abraham L. Cross has accepted the position of director of development for the School of Education. Cross was the former executive director of Delta Upsilon international fraternity in Indianapolis.

– Grady Jones has accepted the position of director of development for biological sciences. Jones was the former director of development for the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.

– Karen Berson has accepted the position of director of corporate relations in engineering. Berson was previously employed at Bethune-Cookman College, Daytona Beach, Fla., where she served as the director of grants acquisition for the center for information technology

– Kristen Scifres has been named the operations and marketing assistant at the Center for E-Business Education and Research (CEER) in the Krannert School of Management. She holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from Santa Clara University. Prior to joining CEER, Scifres worked at Accenture's Center for Strategic Technology and NetPerceptions in Palo Alto, Calif. She also held a sales and marketing engineer position with Aligo Inc., a wireless application server software company in San Francisco.

– Brian Knoy has accepted the position of associate director for the annual fund, effective Dec. 9. Knoy's position will focus on raising annual fund support from young alumni. Knoy currently serves as business manager for development services.

Campus activities

Faculty and staff honors

– Mamoru Ishii, the Walter Zinn Distinguished Professor of Nuclear Engineering, has been awarded a Distinguished Achievement Award in Power and Energy Systems from the Japanese Society of Mechanical Engineers. It is the highest honor conferred by the society. Ishii received the award Oct. 25 in Yokohama, Japan, in recognition of significant leadership in science, engineering, and international exchanges in the field of power and energy systems.

– Bill Field, professor of agricultural and biological engineering, was named a Sagamore of the Wabash. He was recognized for his work in farm safety education and disability and caregiver issues, along with other community services. The governor's highest honor, the award is given to those who have provided distinguished service to the state of Indiana.

– Connie Worthington, office manager for the Horizons program in the Office of the Dean of Students, received the One Brick Higher Award. The award recognizes employees for their contributions that help better Purdue. Worthington was recognized for being "a kind and understanding resource that students interact with daily in the Horizons program," which helps first-generation and low-income students gain access and success in higher education.

– The Purdue Center for Career Opportunities is the sole recipient of the 2002 NACE/Chevron Award for Innovative Programs in Career Services. The award, presented by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, recognizes a college or university for establishing a groundbreaking program in the field of career development. The career center at Purdue created a video series that offers job search instruction.

– Purdue Printing Services received three awards in the Publishing Management Association's annual print competition. A year-end mailing for the University Development Office received a first place award in the special projects category. The agricultural and biological spring 2001 newsletter received first place in the newsletter category. The Purdue Memorial Union catering and events wedding pocket folder received third place in the pocket folder category.

– Paul Brown, professor of aquaculture in the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, received the 2002 Excellence in Soybean Research Award from the Illinois Soybean Association. He was honored for leading a national effort to coordinate research on the use of soybean meal as a feed source in the aquaculture industry. His work has shown the value of soybean meal in feeds for farm-raised fish and shellfish.

Alumni honors

– Leonard Jardine, who graduated in 1960 with a bachelor's degree and was a captain of the Purdue football team, has been named president and COO of NACSCORP, a subsidiary of the National Association of College Stores. NACSCORP, located in Oberin, Ohio, is national wholesale distributor of books and computer products.
