November 14, 2002 School for vegetable growers plants seeds for future growthWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Illiana Vegetable Grower's School will offer growers an opportunity to tap into some of the best vegetable information resources Indiana and Illinois have to offer. The school is open to the public and will be on Jan. 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Teibel's Restaurant, located at the corner of U.S. 41 and U.S. 30 in Schererville, Ind. Registration costs $20 and starts at 8 a.m. Lunch is included. Experts from Purdue University and the University of Illinois will provide information and answer questions on topics such as vegetable pest management, variety selection and insect management of ornamental plants. Purdue presenters include: • Rick Latin, professor of plant pathology, will discuss how to identify and manage seedling diseases. • Rick Foster, entomology professor, will discuss the latest recommendations for managing tomato insects. • Kathryn Orvis, professor of horticulture, will discuss how to grow healthier vegetables and what not to believe about vegetable health claims. Representatives from seed companies, irrigation equipment businesses and other vegetable industry suppliers will participate in a trade show between programs. Participants who have a valid Private Pesticide Applicator License from the state of Indiana may receive credit toward recertification by attending the morning session and paying an additional $10.
