November 14, 2002 Young Graduate House continues transition into academic spaceWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A project to convert Purdue University's Young Graduate House from student housing to an academic and administrative facility will move into its next phase in the summer of 2003. Marvis J. Boscher, executive director of University Residences, said today (Thursday, 11/14) that floors six through 10 will be vacated to allow renovation, beginning Aug. 15. Students will continue to occupy the second and third floors of the building until August 2004, when the facility will finish its transformation into an academic facility. The plan's original timeline called for construction to begin on the sixth floor in August and the remainder of the building to be converted in August 2004. "We're moving ahead on this project more quickly than we anticipated because the funding became available to do the work," Boscher said. Boscher said Young's 24 employees were notified of the revised timetable on Wednesday (11/13). She said none of the workers would lose their jobs as a result of the project. "There will be a variety of opportunities for those affected by this transition to transfer to other areas within housing and food services, in part due to a hiring freeze in university residences that is scheduled to take effect Jan. 1," she said. "Staff members at Young will have the opportunity to interview for positions during the spring semester and will know their new placements by May." Boscher said staff affected by the project will be in their new positions by August. Students who currently live in Young and plan to remain on campus beyond spring 2003 will be assigned new housing, Boscher said. Initial work on the 10-story housing complex, located on Grant Street south of State Street, has already begun. Information Technology at Purdue and the Department of Organizational Leadership and Supervision have facilities on the fourth floor. The fifth floor is under construction and scheduled to be occupied in 2003. Young Graduate House is a co-ed facility for students over the age of 20.
