Kalichstein Laredo Robinson Trio returns to Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21, in Purdue University's Loeb Playhouse.

Admission is $22 for general public, and $15 for Purdue students and children K-12. Tickets can be purchased at Purdue box offices or charged by phone at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW. Tickets also are available at all Ticketmaster outlets. The trio is presented by Purdue Convocations.

Since making their debut as the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio at the White House for President Jimmy Carter's inauguration in January 1977, pianist Joseph Kalichstein, violinist Jaime Laredo and cellist Sharon Robinson have shared standard repertoire and commissioned works with audiences in North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia for more than 20 consecutive seasons.

In 1994, Purdue Convocations co-commissioned a new work by Leon Kirchner for the trio. The composition, "Trio No. 2," will be one of the selections performed during the trio's Purdue appearance.

Two years ago, the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio appeared at Carnegie Hall at a concert celebrating the 40th anniversary of Jaime Laredo's Carnegie debut recital. They also were featured performers at the National Symphony Orchestra's Beethoven Festival, conducted by Leonard Slatkin and performed at Carnegie Hall's "Centennial Series," which helped celebrate the 100th birthday of one of this country's most illustrious music centers.

The trio has appeared at major international music festivals in Aldeburgh, Edinburgh, Grenada, Helsinki and Tivoli and performed in Amsterdam, Brussels, Copenhagen, Lisbon, London, Vienna and Paris.

Highlights from their vast discography include a two-disc set the of complete chamber works of Ravel, a critically-acclaimed all-Haydn release, recordings of the complete Brahms and Mendelssohn trios, and the complete string sonatas and trios of Shostakovich.

The New York Times calls the trio "one of the best-blended, most sensitive and intelligent piano trios in the world today." According to the Chicago Sun Times: "There is no finer piano trio than Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson."
