Purdue University recognizes Veterans Awareness Week

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue Student Union Board has planned two events in recognition of Veterans Awareness Week.

The Pledge of Allegiance will be recited on Veterans' Day, (Monday, 11/11) at 11:11 a.m. in the Great Hall of the Purdue Memorial Union. The Purdue Varsity Glee Club and the Purdue Band will perform the national anthem and other patriotic songs. Speakers include:

• PMU director Robert Mindrom.

• Col. Barry Richmond, a strategic planning officer for the Military Department of Indiana.

• Sgt. Kim Nguyen, a Purdue students who served on a peacekeeping force in Bosnia.

A Table of Remembrance also will be on display. The display pays tribute to military personnel who have been killed in action, listed as missing in action or who have been prisoners of war.

Alex Rust, PSUB Veterans Awareness Week co-project leader, says it is important that the significance of Veterans' Day not be forgotten.

"We feel it is important to recognize and honor those who have fought and died for our country and freedom," Rust says. "I encourage the community to come out an honor our veterans."

A brown bag discussion on the meaning of Veterans' Day will take place from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday (11/13) in the Purdue Memorial Union, Room 118. Veterans and Purdue ROTC members will lead the discussion and share their stories.
