Purdue cooperative house moving to new location

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Circle Pines Cooperative is moving on to bigger and better things – literally.

After 62 years at its current location, 225 S. Grant St., Circle Pines will relocate to 1000 David Ross Road and acquire property previously occupied by Theta Xi Fraternity. Plans call for Circle Pines to vacate in December and have its approximately 30 members move into their new house by the start of the 2003 spring semester.

Circle Pines is the second cooperative to move its location since the ownership of nine cooperatives was transferred to their respective alumni corporation boards upon the dissolution of the Purdue Cooperative Housing Association in 1999. Fairway Cooperative sold its property on 359 Vine St. to a private developer and built a new house at 1320 David Ross Road this past summer.

"With all the new construction going on around us, particularly with the new alumni center, we felt now was the time to be proactive and start looking at other properties," said Rick Comingore, president of the Circle Pines Corporation Board. "The Theta Xi house was available, in a good location, and everything just quickly fell into place."

Dan Rhodes, Circle Pines president, said cooperative members are looking forward to the move.

"Everyone is excited," he said. "We are ready to start this transition."

Circle Pines Cooperative was established in 1939 and was located at 460 North Grant St. until 1940, when it moved to 225 S. Grant St.

Purdue's cooperative housing system, governed by the Purdue Cooperative Council, includes five houses for men and seven houses for women. All twelve houses operate on the principles of cooperative living in which the residents divide tasks and manage their houses for the benefit of each other.
