October 21, 2002 Two Extension programs awarded honorsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Two outstanding Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service programs were recognized at the annual Extension conference Tuesday (10/15) on Purdue's West Lafayette campus. Allen County's 2001 Amish Health and Safety Fair received the H.A. Wadsworth County Staff Award. The idea for the fair originated from a trip by an Allen County Extension educator and an Amish bishop to a similar program. It flourished with the help of Allen County educators Vickie Hadley, Gonzalee Martin, Barb Thuma and Extension director Roger Moll, along with the Allen County Amish community and more than 10 other collaborating organizations. Five hundred people attended the event, which included childhood immunizations; cholesterol, blood pressure and osteoporosis screenings; and a pesticide recertification workshop. Educational presentations also were made on the safety hazards of Amish farm equipment, emphasizing the hazards for youths under age 16. As a result of the health screenings, 67 people were referred to their family doctors for treatment. The success of the fair in improving services to the local Amish community has encouraged the Purdue Extension office in Allen County to make it an annual event. A Team Award was presented to the Indiana Beef Evaluation and Economic Feeding Program. In the past six years, Kern Hendrix, beef specialist, and agriculture and natural resources educators Andy Boston of Orange County, Byron Fagg of Washington County, and Dave Redman of Lawrence County, have worked with 150 beef cattle producers and more than 2,000 beef cattle through IBEEF. The program assists producers in developing tools to improve management practices and the genetic quality of their herds. The producers are provided with feedlot performance, carcass data and economic analysis as evaluation tools for improving the quality and marketability of Indiana feeder calves. Using the data assists the producers with information to improve the economic performance of their cattle and, thus, their profit margins. CONTACT: Floyd Branson, Purdue Extension, (765) 494-8490.
