'Are You My Mother?' brings children's favorite to life

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A musical version of P.D. Eastman's popular children's book, "Are You My Mother?" will be presented at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, in Loeb Playhouse.

Admission is $10 for general public, and $7 for Purdue students and children K-12. Tickets can be purchased at Purdue box offices or charged by phone at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW. Tickets also are available at all Ticketmaster outlets. "Are You My Mother?" is presented by Purdue Convocations.

"Are You My Mother?" is an original musical based on P.D. Eastman's enduring children's classic by the same name. The musical, created by ArtsPower Touring Theatre with the assistance of a grant from Panasonic, begins when Baby Bird hatches from her egg only to find an empty nest.

Unaware that her mother has left to find food, Baby Bird decides to leave the nest to look for her. Along the way, she meets an array of colorful characters who help and advise her.

"Are You My Mother?" features a rich, upbeat musical score and imaginative sets. Greg Gunning, ArtsPower's artistic director, adapted and directed the show and wrote the lyrics. Richard DeRosa wrote and orchestrated the musical score.

Mark and Gary Blackman, identical twins and former jazz musicians, founded ArtsPower in 1985 and have been steering its course ever since. ArtsPower has grown into one of America's premiere producers of professional Equity theater for young and family audiences, the second largest such company in the nation. Its 16 professional touring productions have been seen by more than 5 million people in 40 states – from Alaska to Florida – in some of the nation's top cultural centers, including The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and Lincoln Center in New York City.
