October 11, 2002 Academy of Ancient Music returns to Loeb PlayhouseWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Academy of Ancient Music, under the direction of renowned violinist Andrew Manze, will be presented at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, in Loeb Playhouse. Admission is $24 for general public, and $18 for Purdue students and children K-12. Tickets can be purchased at Purdue box offices or charged by phone at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW. Tickets also are available at all Ticketmaster outlets. The Academy of Ancient Music is presented by Purdue Convocations. The original Academy of Ancient Music was established in 1726 for the purpose of studying and performing "old" music – defined initially as music composed at least a century earlier, but soon amended to include more contemporary composers, most notably Handel. The modern revival of the academy, founded by Christopher Hogwood in 1973, created one of the first "period-instrument" orchestras and is now renowned worldwide for its concerts and recordings of music from the Baroque, Classical and early Romantic eras, all performed on authentic instruments from the period in which the music was written. The group last performed at Purdue in 1997 under the direction of Hogwood. The Academy of Ancient Music is especially well-known for its pioneering recordings under Hogwood. Having been the first orchestra to record all Mozart's symphonies on period instruments, the academy has since recorded the complete piano concertos and symphonies of Beethoven. The group is now part way through recording the complete Haydn symphonies and the complete Mozart piano concertos with fortepianist Robert Levin. In 1996 the artistic directorship of the academy was extended with the appointment of Paul Goodwin as associate conductor and Andrew Manze as associate director. Manze will be conducting the Loeb Playhouse performance and also will serve as solo violinist. Manze's recordings include Bach's violin concertos, Vivaldi's "Concert for the Prince of Poland," the complete Concerti Grossi Op.6 of Handel (nominated for a Grammy), the Concerti Grossi of Geminiani (after Corelli Op.5) and the Bach harpsichord concertos with soloist Richard Egarr.
