Rent-a-Rower to raise funds for Purdue Crew

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Crew members will soon put their oars aside to do handiwork for their annual Rent-a-Rower fund-raising event.

For $50 per rower, crew members will work up to five hours beginning at 9 a.m. on Sunday , Oct. 20; Saturday, Nov. 2; Sunday, Nov. 10; or Saturday, Nov. 16. Potential jobs include yard work, painting, building fences and cleaning out garages. The Purdue Crew has approximately 200 student-athletes taking part.

Crew member Mark Masloob, a junior in the Krannert School of Management from Fort Wayne, Ind., says he enjoys the extra workouts.

"Rent-A-Rower gives me a chance to do the fall yard work that I am missing out in doing at home," Masloob says.

To request a rower, fill out the electronic form on line. Jobs will be filled on a first-come basis. The club will use the proceeds to defer some of their $220,000 in operational expenses, which include travel and competition participation expenses.

Organized in 1949, Purdue Crew is among the oldest university clubs in the United States. Members practice five days a week on the Wabash River in Greater Lafayette. Since 1981 the club has won four Midwestern Championships, six Southern Championships, the Visitor's Cup Race at the San Diego Crew Classic and five Dad Vail National Championships.
