Purdue Airport crisis drill to test emergency response effectiveness

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue University Airport will be conducting a full-scale aircraft emergency drill at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday (10/9) as university and area emergency teams test their crisis response procedures.

More than 100 people will be involved in the exercise, including the fire and police departments from Purdue and several area agencies, as well as the Red Cross and the Tippecanoe County Emergency Management Agency.

"The Federal Aviation Administration requires airports to practice a full-scale emergency response activity every three years," said airport director Betty Stansbury. "This gives emergency response teams an opportunity to practice responding to different types of emergencies at the airport."

The drill will simulate an on-the-ground collision between a charter 737 airplane and a general aviation single-engine plane, she said. Students from the Department of Aviation Technology will act out various roles in the exercise.

Among the 100 people expected to take part in the drill will be representatives from the Purdue fire and police departments; Lafayette, West Lafayette and Wabash Township fire departments; Lafayette and West Lafayette police departments; Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department; the Tippecanoe County Emergency Management Agency; Tippecanoe County Emergency Ambulance Service; the Tippecanoe County Chapter of the American Red Cross; the Tippecanoe County Coroner's Office; the Purdue Airport; and Purdue University Relations.

The drill should last about two hours, Stansbury said.
