September 18, 2002 MEDIA ADVISORY UPDATE: Change for Sunday, Sept. 22 Discover Purdue news events start Thursday, Sept. 19Purdue University is on its way to the next level – and journalists are invited to follow the celebration during a weeklong series of groundbreakings and special events Thursay (9/19) to Saturday, Sept. 28, culminating in the announcement of the largest fund-raising campaign ever for any college or university in Indiana. Two of the largest gifts in the history of Purdue will be announced, and numerous major building projects will move from the wish list to reality, thanks exclusively to private giving. Discover Purdue Week is part of the theme, coined last fall, which invites the public to learn about the university – its leadership and its future potential for economic development, research and education. Each event highlighted during Discover Purdue Week was selected because of its relationship to the university's strategic plan. Below is a quick list of the week's agenda, followed by information about the events. Please note that there will be an embargoed news release for eight of the gift announcements, allowing you to print and broadcast your stories the morning of the events. In several cases there also is significant information, photos and video already available should you want to preview the groundbreakings. Purdue also will offer a satellite feed Thursday and Friday. Thursday, Sept. 19 Purdue brand identity unveiled Journalists are invited to see and photograph Purdue's new brand identity at 10 a.m. in the Office of the Vice President for University Relations, Room 217 Hovde Hall. A news release and digital images will be available that day, along with samples of new official logos and typography that Purdue will use in the future. One will create a new academic chair. The other will honor retiring Professor Harry Pardue and create a new center. A symbolic groundbreaking for the golf facility is planned for approximately 10 a.m. The President's Council event will begin in the Purdue Memorial Union Ballrooms three hours before the Purdue-Wake Forest football game that Saturday. Friday/Sunday, Sept. 20/22 (EMBARGOED NEWS RELEASE) Advance on civil engineering lab groundbreaking, gift We will issue an advance news release on Friday for use on Sunday, Sept. 22, concerning the Sept. 27 groundbreaking and the Indianapolis donor for an $11 million civil engineering laboratory that will be among the best in the world for studying large-scale structures. Researchers will use the lab to study new materials, design procedures and sensing technologies in an effort to make buildings and other structures immune to natural (earthquakes, tornadoes) and human-induced (terrorism, arson) disasters. Friday/Monday, Sept. 20/23 (EMBARGOED NEWS RELEASE) Burton Morgan Center groundbreaking celebration Purdue University and its Krannert School of Management will celebrate entrepreneurship's future home in Purdue's Discovery Park during a 10:30 a.m. Monday (9/23) event in the Elliott Hall of Music. The $7 million, 31,000-square-foot Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship will be a two-story facility and will include a 72-seat lecture room, a presentation room and several conference and break-out rooms for use by park occupants. Construction on the center is scheduled to begin before the end of this year. Tuesday, Sept. 24 Visual and Performing Arts Building The School of Liberal Arts will announce the largest gift to date for the $38 million Visual and Performing Arts Building at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24 at Westwood, the home of Purdue President Martin C. Jischke, on the west side of McCormack Road between Third Street and Stadium Avenue. The new building, under construction on the South Campus, will house Purdue's theater, art and design, music, and dance academic programs. Media should call to reserve space at the Westwood event. Thursday, Sept. 26 Weinberger speaks, Indy-area exec honored Caspar Weinberger, former U.S. secretary of defense and current chairman of Forbes magazine, will be the keynote dinner speaker at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at Purdue's Krannert School of Management second annual Leadership Speakers Series in the Westin Hotel, 50 S. Capitol Ave., Indianapolis. Purdue President Martin C. Jischke and Krannert Dean Richard Cosier also will make remarks. Several alumni will be honored. A special leadership award will be presented to Indianapolis-area executive William Bindley, chairman and CEO of Bindley Capital Partners LLC. His company, formerly Bindley Western Industries that Bindley founded in 1968, is now owned by Cardinal Health. The company is the second largest in Indiana. Thursday, Sept. 26 Purdue Homecoming Parade The annual Purdue Boilermaker Night Train Parade will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26. The parade will begin at the intersection of Tower and North Russell drives. It will travel down North Russell Drive and take a right on First Street, where it will continue to MacArthur Drive and take another right. The parade will then make its way up MacArthur Drive to Third Street, where it will take a right and head up to North Intramural Drive. There it will take a left and proceed to Ross-Ade Stadium. Various speakers will address the alumni on the Purdue (Engineering) Mall, with Purdue President Martin C. Jischke scheduled to talk at 3:30 p.m. Astronauts will be available to sign autographs and pose for pictures. Friday/Saturday, Sept. 27/28 (EMBARGOED NEWS RELEASE) Chemical engineering groundbreaking, gift Purdue's School of Chemical Engineering will break ground at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, in the parking lot behind the Chemical Engineering Building on a facilities expansion project expected to cost more than $20 million. The school will build a five-story, 96,000-square-foot addition on the current building and equip the facility with state-of-the-art technologies and high-performance instrumentation. The project is being funded solely with private funds, and the details about the donors will be announced at that time.
