Career fair features jobs in restaurant, hotel industry

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Representatives from more than 50 companies in the hospitality industry are expected to take part in a career fair Sept. 24 on the Purdue University campus.

"We're expecting the hospitality and tourism management department's No. 1 national ranking to bring out more companies this year," said Kier Crites, a senior hospitality and tourism management major, who is the student publicity chairperson for the event. Students manage all of the HTM Career Day Events.

The event will be in the North and South Ballrooms of the Purdue Memorial Union from 12:30-3:30 p.m. Both the career fair and a morning session with a hospitality industry leader are free and open to all Purdue students and the general public. The career fair is sponsored by Purdue's Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management.

Students should bring resumes and dress in business attire, said Jill Poehlein, HTM's career center director. Students will have the opportunity to talk to representatives of companies they are interested in working for full time or for internships. Employers will make arrangements later to interview students one-on-one for positions.

Employers who have sent representatives regularly to the career fair include Marriott International Inc., Red Lobster, Aramark Worldwide Corp. and Hyatt Hotels and Restaurants.

This year's featured industry leader is Edna Morris, president of Red Lobster Restaurants, who will speak at 10:30 a.m. in Stewart Center's Fowler Hall.

In July, Purdue's hospitality and tourism management undergraduate program was ranked No. 1 nationally in a survey published in the Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Education.
