Trustees OK Calumet lab work, increase fire safety project budget

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue University Board of Trustees today (Friday, 9/13) awarded a $5.4 million contract for the redesigned Purdue University-Calumet Gyte Laboratory renovation project.

The board also approved a funding increase for a West Lafayette campus residence hall air-conditioning project and authorized an architect to design the next phases of two other campus residence hall fire safety system projects.

Trustees awarded the Gyte Laboratory contract to Fred Berglund and Sons Inc., of Chesterton, Ind., which will begin the renovation project in December. In June the board rejected bids for the project. Prior to seeking new bids, the plans were altered by Holabird and Root of Chicago, which provided architect and engineering services.

Built in the 1950s and 1960s, the chemistry and science laboratories need improvements to meet instructional, infrastructure and safety requirements.

The board also authorized spending an additional $511,000 for the Shreve Hall student room air-conditioning project. The funds will permit installation of chilled water units and controls in individual rooms and an upgrade of distribution systems. Chilled water piping and fire protection sprinklers will be installed throughout the building, and the fire alarm system will be upgraded.

Two phases of the project have been completed at a cost of $2.6 million. The third and final phase will be bid in the spring.

In other business, the board approved hiring an architect to design the next phases of fire safety system projects in two residence halls. Vintage Archonics Inc. of Fort Wayne, Ind., which provided architectural and engineering services for earlier phases of the two projects, will continue planning the $715,000 third phase of the Hawkins Graduate House project and the $710, 500 second phase of the Tarkington Residential Hall project.
