Purdue noncredit classes available this fall

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The professional and personal possibilities with a computer are endless, and so are the security threats.

Two of Purdue University's fall noncredit classes – Basics of Information Security and What Every Home Internet User Needs to Know about Information Security, will help individuals and businesses with information security. Melissa Dark and Matt Rose, from the Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security, are teaching both programs.

Individuals responsible for information systems in small businesses, schools and nonprofit organizations can learn how to assess their organizations' information security needs with practical and affordable means in The Basics of Information Security. This class will be offered from 7-9 p.m. on Nov. 5, 12, 19 and 26. The cost is $250, or $225 for additional employees of the same organization.

Personal computer users run various risks ranging from people seeking personal information to receiving unsolicited e-mails. What Every Home Internet User Needs to Know about Information Security will cover how to know if financial transactions are secure, how to eliminate junk e-mail and protect home systems from viruses and worms. This hands-on class will be offered from 7-9 p.m. on Oct. 1, 8 and 15. The cost is $70.

The other classes offered this fall pertain to improving management communication and cooking.

Employees can learn about good communication theory from Management Communication: Up and Down the Ladder. In this class, J. Michael Lillich, business writer with the Purdue News Service, will show employees how to tune up their business writing, decide when e-mail should be used and how to communicate effectively up and down the organizational hierarchy. This class will be offered from 7-9 p.m. on Oct. 1, 8, 15 and 22. The cost is $170.

Chef Carl Behnke, chef and instructor in the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management, is offering another Lunch and Learn Series after his summer sessions filled to capacity. He also will add Special Evening Seminar: Holiday Appetizers. Behnke's Lunch and Learn series will feature Sauces: Flavor Made Easy at noon on Oct. 23 and Desserts: Simple Yet Sinful at noon on Nov. 4. These sessions are $20 each and include lunch. Holiday Appetizers will be offered at 6 p.m. on Nov. 18 for $20 and includes samples.

Preregistration is required for each class. Spaces are limited.
