Hunger Banquet to feed conscience of Purdue community

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – To dramatize the unequal distribution of resources that lead to world hunger, the Purdue Student Union Board is sponsoring its annual Hunger Banquet.

The event, which also will raise funds for the Lafayette Food Finders Food Bank, will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, in the Purdue Memorial Union North Ballroom.

The Hunger Banquet features meals that will be prepared and divided among the guests in proportions that represent actual income levels among the world's high- (15 percent), middle- (30 percent), and low- (55 percent) income countries. Hunger Banquet guests will be selected for one of the three groups through a random drawing.

Dario Perdomo, PSUB director of ideas and issues, says the Hunger Banquet is an effective consciousness raiser.

"It is a powerful tool that brings to life the inequalities of our world and challenges us, as the more economically fortunate, to realize how our decisions affect others in the world," Perdomo says. "Few leave the Hunger Banquet with full stomachs, but all leave filled with a greater understanding of the world around us."

Celebrity servers, including state representative Sheila Klinker, will assist in distributing the meals.

People who want to attend the Hunger Banquet must RSVP by Friday, Sept. 13. Tickets are $3 for students and $6 for the general public and may be purchased at PSUB office in Room 268 of the Purdue Memorial Union.
