August 30, 2002 Appointments and promotions; faculty, staff and student honors • Appointments and promotions – Lee Gordon, director of student services computing, has been named assistant vice president for student services technology and assessment. Gordon, who has been director of Student Services Computing since 1996, has 15 years of experience in student services at Purdue University. Gordon's Purdue career began in 1987 as director of Financial and Accounting Services. In 1988, he was promoted to associate director of financial aid, and in 1995, he was named the executive associate director of financial aid. Gordon also is chair for the Purdue TRAX Initiative and Student Services Computing Steering Committee. He received the Western Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators' Special Recognition Award in 1996. Gordon was the project leader for the design, development and installation of FAVORS (Financial Aid Voice Response System), and a member of the project team that developed a dial-in electronic admissions and early financial-aid application. He also is entering his third year as co-chair of the Council of Advocates for Excellence 21. Gordon earned his bachelor's degree from Penn State in 1982 and his master's from Oral Roberts in 1985. – Tom Reiter has been named compliance adviser in the student services area of Intercollegiate Athletics, effective Sept. 9. Reiter, head men's basketball coach at Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pa., was Purdue's assistant men's basketball coach from 1986 to 1993. While at Washington and Jefferson, Reiter also served as the main compliance contact within athletics and served on many NCAA Division III committees. In his new position, Reiter will monitor recruiting records from all sports, set up and conduct compliance rules education programs, coordinate NCAA coaches certification exams, serve as a contact for professional sports agents, assist with development and maintenance of the compliance Web site, and review and interpret Big Ten and NCAA regulations and guidelines. • Faculty and staff honors – Purdue University's Breaking New Ground Resource Center and Outreach Program (BNG) has received the Leadership Award from the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of America, an association for the advancement of rehabilitative and assistive technologies for people with disabilities. The award recognized BNG's development and implementation of technology and information resources to assist persons with disabilities in agricultural and rural communities. The society cited BNG for producing more than 50 publications and videos – including a manual of products and modifications for farm-related equipment, facilities and tools – and its role in establishing the U.S. Department of Agriculture's AgrAbility Program for farm and ranch families. BNG is a program within Purdue's Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering, offering services and resources for persons with disabilities working in agriculture. – Kwei Tang, professor of management in the Krannert School of Management, received a certificate of excellence from IIE Transactions academic journal for "exemplary service to the quality and reliability focus issues of IIE Transactions." Tang, whose area of teaching and research is quantitative methods, is a department editor on design of experiments and robust designs for IIE Transactions. Tang was one of less than a dozen recipients of certificates of excellence out of more than 200 IIE Transactions board members, department editors and staff. Tang received the award in May.   • Student honors Purdue student selected as a Congressional Science Fellow WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ‹ Brian Bowker, a doctoral student in animal sciences under the direction of Dave Gerrard, has been selected as a Congressional Science Fellow. Bowker's duties as a science fellow will include serving for one year as a legislative assistant for a member of Congress or congressional committee and conferring with the staff on how to deal with scientific issues dealing with public policy.
