Purdue students invited to 'Back to School Bash'

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A Bruno's pizza each week for a year and free movie passes are two of the many prizes Purdue students can win at the "Back to School Bash" on Saturday, Aug. 24.

The bash, from 4-8 p.m. in the Morton Community Center parking lot, will feature booths set up by approximately 30 merchants from the Levee, Purdue Village and Purdue West shopping plazas. Each merchant will provide literature, coupons and free items, along with tickets for hourly prize drawings. Nothing will be sold.

Representatives from Purdue University's Dean of Students Office, the city of West Lafayette, the West Lafayette Public Library, the Tippecanoe Arts Federation and the New Chauncey Neighborhood Association also will be present to hand out literature and answer questions. Hot dogs and soft drinks will be served.

Tom Robinson, Purdue vice president for student services and Purdue Community Issues Team chair, says the Back to School Bash is intended to make students feel welcome while providing them with useful information.

"This should be another neat opportunity for the community to say, 'We're glad you're here,'" Robinson says.

Jan Mills, West Lafayette City Council member and West Lafayette Community Issues Team chair, says she hopes many students attend the event.

"I am pleased that the community is reaching out to students," Mills says. "It should be a fun, festive time. I am looking forward to it."

The Back to School Bash is sponsored by Purdue, the city of West Lafayette, the Levee Merchants Association, the Chauncey Hill Merchants Association, the Purdue West Merchants Association, the Purdue Research Foundation and the New Chauncey Neighborhood Association.
