August 13, 2002 HumanRITE offers residence hall counselors educational theatreWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – HumanRITE, the Human Relations Interactive Theatre Ensemble at Purdue University, will kick off its 2002-03 season by performing for 275 Purdue residence hall counselors. The performances, which will focus on the subjects of sexual assault, alcohol abuse and harassment, will take place at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Friday (8/16) in Stewart Center, Room 214. Allyson Hodge, director of operations for Purdue University Residences, says she thinks the performances will have a large impact on the counselors. "My first exposure to HumanRITE and its 'Reasonable People' performance on sexual harassment set the foundation for educating our counseling staff on such an important topic," Hodge says. "Fostering a collaborative relationship with HumanRITE and University Residences will expand our growth in training and cultivate our students and staff regarding the seriousness of harassment at every level." Later this month on Monday, Aug. 26, three HumanRITE ensemble members will travel to Indianapolis to perform for Butler University's freshman orientation program. Four performances, focusing on the issues that might face an incoming freshman, will be given for the entire freshman class at Butler. HumanRITE director Katherine Burke says the ensemble is looking forward to the trip. "We are so pleased to be serving as ambassadors for Purdue University," Burke says. "By traveling to other schools around Indiana, HumanRITE reflects on Purdue's commitment to diversity, wellness and the arts." Through its interactive performances, HumanRITE promotes conversation and education about delicate subjects. During the 2000-01 season, HumanRITE wrote and performed four original plays. "Trouble the Water, a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.," was performed as part of a campus celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Day. "Amor Fati," a two-person drama, focused on the issues faced by adult children of alcoholics. "Diversity and Discrimination" was televised live from the Black Cultural Center to the entire campus and surrounding area via Boiler TV and Insight Communications. "Reasonable People," a look at sexual harassment in the workplace, was written and performed for employees of Purdue. The theatre ensemble consists of three veterans and two newcomers, all of whom are working toward their master of fine arts degrees in the Purdue Professional Actor Training Program. Jeremy Clark of Great Falls, Mont., David Levine of New Haven, Conn., and Brian Edgecomb of Bella Glade, Fla., will be returning for a second season, while Erin Reitz of Lincoln, Neb., and Megan Ryan of Madison, Wis., are new additions to the company.
