School of Health Sciences presents prestigious awards

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue University School of Health Sciences has honored four students who have demonstrated academic excellence.

Nicole Lee Taylor, a freshman from Lafayette, Ind., who is majoring in general health sciences with a pre-medicine concentration, received the Paul L. Ziemer Award for outstanding freshman scholastic performance. The award is presented annually to a freshman on the basis of scholarship, professional attitude and interest in research.

Cameron J. Vanlaningham, a senior medical technology major from Mentone, Ind., received the 2002 Distinguished Medical Technology Student Award. The award is presented annually to a student who demonstrates outstanding performance in a hospital's clinical program.

Rene L. Daniel, a senior from Plainfield, Ind., who is majoring in general health sciences with a concentration in prephysical therapy, received the Distinguished Health Sciences Student Award. The award is presented annually to an outstanding senior in health sciences on the basis of scholarship, professional attitude and service.

Stacy Zolondz, a junior from St. John, Ind., who is majoring in medical technology, received the Barbara Young Award. The award is presented to a junior who exhibits the qualities of leadership, self-reliance and outstanding motivation and has been accepted into a clinical program for their senior year.

The award is named for Barbara Young, who was a member of the first class of students majoring in medical technology when the School of Health Sciences was created in 1979. Young, who excelled academically, graduated in the summer of 1982 and was employed as a registered medical technologist. In December of 1982, Young suddenly became ill and lapsed into a coma. She died from a brain tumor after three days. Her parents established the award in her memory.
