Purdue alum new associate dean of agriculture

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Dale Whittaker has assumed the role of associate dean of the School of Agriculture and director of academic programs at Purdue University. He replaces Karl Brandt who has returned to teaching in the Department of Biochemistry.

Dale Whittaker

Whittaker came to Purdue from Texas A&M University, where he was associate department head and professor of agricultural engineering. Whittaker received his bachelor's degree in agricultural engineering at Texas A&M and earned both his master's and doctoral degrees in agricultural engineering at Purdue.

"Purdue already has a great agriculture program, and I would like to see more students take advantage of what the school has to offer," Whittaker said. The School of Agriculture has 10 academic departments and offers a variety of programs, from economics to the environment to food science and communications.

"I will also continue to mesh the academic vision of the School of Agriculture with the needs of the state of Indiana. I believe in business and government partnerships that improve school resources and the quality of the learning experience for students."

Whittaker started his new position July 1.

"We are excited to have Dale back at Purdue," said Victor Lechtenberg, dean of agriculture. "As a former student, he has a unique insight into our academic programs and brings some great new ideas."

A reception for the new associate dean and department heads in the School of Agriculture will be 2-4 p.m. Aug. 14 during Discover Purdue Day at the Indiana State Fair. The reception will be on the third floor of the Home and Family Arts Building at the fairgrounds.

Brandt was the associate dean of agriculture for 18 years and a faculty member since 1966.

"My time as the associate dean has been very satisfying, and many good things have happened. But I want to do more teaching before I retire," Brandt said. "Teaching allows me to meet interesting students and help them discover new capabilities and have an impact on their lives as they work to achieve their educational goals."
