Purdue plans grand opening of Colby Fitness Center

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue Division of Recreational Sports will celebrate the grand opening of the newly remodeled Colby Fitness Center in September.

The 19,000 square-foot facility, located in the lower level of the Recreational Sports Center, features more than 175 pieces of cardiovascular and strength training equipment, of which nearly one-third is new. The free weight equipment, including Olympic benches, dumbbells and bars has been completely upgraded.

Other fitness center highlights include 15 televisions in the cardiovascular equipment zone and a state-of-the art stereo system. Wearing AM/FM headsets, users can tune into eight TV stations or two radio stations. The center also features central air conditioning and full elevator access.

The area was named the Colby Fitness Center in honor of Ken and Linda Colby of San Diego, Calif., who donated $1 million. Purdue students, faculty and staff are invited to tour the Recreational Sports Center and Boilermaker Aquatic Center. To make reservations, call (775) 494-3108 or visit the welcome center front desk.

Recreational sports division marketing director Andy Milton says those who have not seen the center's new look will be impressed.

"We are eagerly awaiting the opening of the Colby Fitness Center and anticipate it becoming a premier gathering place for the entire Purdue community," he says. "The quality of our new equipment, the user-friendly environment and the pure size of the fitness center alone is going to make it hard for people to not feel motivated to begin or improve their fitness routines."

The Division of Recreational Sports will increase its daily admission fee for guests to $5 as of Wednesday, Aug. 14. Information regarding fees and membership eligibility can be viewed on the Web.
