Purdue prepares for summer commencement ceremonies

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Approximately 1,227 Purdue University students will receive degrees during commencement ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, in the Elliott Hall of Music.

Melinda Gardner, assistant registrar, said 504 students will be eligible for undergraduate degrees, and 723 students qualify for advanced degrees.

Purdue President Martin C. Jischke will be the commencement speaker. Purdue Alumni Association President Phillip A. Waid of Hilliard, Ohio, also will address the new graduates. Emily M. Cline of West Lafayette, Ind., will provide the student response. She will earn a bachelor's degree from the School of Agriculture.

Music for the ceremony will be performed by the Purdue Commencement Band, conducted by Jay S. Gephart. The Purdue Musical Organizations' Summer Commencement Choir, under the direction of Ly (Lee) K. Tartell, also will perform.

This will be the 187th commencement ceremony at Purdue. The university has recognized summer graduates at the West Lafayette campus every year since 1984.
