July 15, 2002 JOURNALISTS: Here's a story idea and a list of selected Purdue events during the next two weeks. Purdue students compete in weed contestPurdue University students will match wits and knowledge against students from 12 other universities in the North Central Weed Science Society 2002 Collegiate Weed Science Contest. The agricultural competition takes place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 18 at Dow AgroSciences Midwest Research Center, 1736 N. County Road 1200 East, Fowler, Ind. Contestants will be judged in individual and team events on weed identification, sprayer calibration, identification of unknown herbicides and problem solving/recommendations. Program aids student researchMore than 30 students from underrepresented ethnic groups will be participating in research projects during the eight-week Summer Research Opportunity Program, sponsored by the Purdue Graduate School; the schools of Agriculture, Engineering, Liberal Arts, Pharmacy and Science; and Procter & Gamble Inc. The program runs through July 27. Activities include a GRE workshop, evening meetings on graduate school related topics, occasional field trips and social functions, and participation in a two-day conference with students in similar programs at other Big Ten institutions. Purdue road show departs for ChicagoPurdue University and President Martin C. Jischke will bring "Purdue Days" to Chicago's Navy Pier (600 E. Grand Ave.) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 20. The event is part of the university's ongoing Discover Purdue initiative, designed to give citizens and prospective students an inside glimpse of the university. Purdue Day in Chicago will include faculty, staff and alumni who will be participating in an 85-booth informational display in Exhibition Hall B. Several of the booths and displays should provide excellent photo opportunities. There will be a free program featuring WGN radio personality and Purdue alum, Max Armstong, who will serve as the master of ceremonies for the day's activities.
