Hovde Award seeks nominations for contribution to rural Indiana

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Nominations are being accepted for this year's Frederick L. Hovde Award of Excellence that honors a Purdue University staff member who contributes to the well-being and progress of rural Indiana.

"It is fitting that Purdue recognizes one of its own for outstanding performance in providing educational excellence to rural people of Indiana," David Petritz, Purdue Cooperative Extension Service director. "These individuals have given in a way that is significantly above the norm."

Hovde served as Purdue's president from 1946 until his retirement in 1971. He believed in putting higher education within everyone's reach and also demanded excellence in teaching, research and service, Petritz said. When Hovde retired, the Indiana Farm Bureau Inc. presented Purdue with a monetary gift for this award, given in appreciation of his 25 years of leadership to higher education in Indiana.

Any Purdue staff member can be nominated for the award, which encompasses all schools, divisions and units of the university, including regional campuses and cooperative extension field staff. Staff members nominated in the past are eligible for reconsideration this year if renominated. A nominee's contribution may be in one or more of the following areas: classroom and counseling performance, research achievement and Extension education programs.

Purdue President Martin C. Jischke will chair the committee to select this year's recipient. The winner receives an $800 cash prize and a plaque. The recipient's name also is added to a permanent display in the Agricultural Administration Building on the West Lafayette campus.

Nomination letters can be submitted by an individual or organization and should include a one-page supporting statement. Nominations must be submitted by Sept. 27 and should be e-mailed to nancy.goodman@ces.purdue.edu or by mail to Hovde Award Committee, Purdue University, 1140 Ag Administration Building, West Lafayette, IN 47907-1140.
