July 12, 2002 Appointments, promotions, faculty and staff honors •Appointments and promotions: –G. Logan Jordan has been promoted to associate dean of administration from assistant dean for administration at the Krannert School of Management. His responsibilities include the support services, technological and physical infrastructure, including the building committee for Jerry S. Rawls Hall, which will be complete in summer 2003, and the Burton D. Morgan Entrepreneurship Center, currently under development. Jordan is responsible for the support services and information technology staff at the Krannert School and serves on the dean's staff in a support role on budgets, accreditation and staffing. Jordan serves on a number of university committees, including the board of the Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship, the health care advisory committee, the Information technology strategic planning committee and is serving as chair of the Discovery Park strategic planning task force. Jordan's field of academic interest is strategic management, and he has taught in the Krannert School's MBA, undergraduate and executive education programs. He has been at the Krannert School since 1982. • Faculty and staff honors: – Purdue University has been selected as one of 54 semifinalists from more than 130 entries in the process to identify "Institutions of Excellence in the First College Year." The selection by the Policy Center on the First Year of College at Brevard College recognizes Purdue's initiatives on behalf of first-year students through the Lilly Endowment Retention Initiatives project dedicated to preparing incoming students for their college experience. In 1997, the Lilly Endowment awarded Purdue $5 million to enhance its retention efforts and to meet a goal of increasing Purdue's six-year baccalaureate completion rate by 5 percent at each campus. This is the fifth year of the five-year grant. The Lilly retention initiative programs help students adjust academically and socially after they arrive on campus and strive to improve teaching and counseling services for students. Since the programs were implemented, first-to-second year retention rates have risen 4.8 percent systemwide, said Andrew K. Koch, Purdue's Lilly Endowment Retention Initiatives senior project officer. Twelve finalists will be selected and notified around the first of August, Koch said. The Policy Center on the First Year of College at Brevard College, N.C., is supported by the Atlantic Philanthropies and the Pew Charitable Trusts. – Richard Alan Goebel received the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) Practitioner of the Year Award on March 25, at the association’s 69 Annual Meeting in Boston. The award is the association’s highest honor and is given for outstanding contributions to the profession and the community. Goebel’s current positions include special assistant to the dean at the School of Veterinary Medicine, president and hospital co-director of Magrane Pet Medical Center in West Lafayette, Ind., and president of Simmons and Associates Great Lakes Inc., a veterinary practice brokerage, appraisal and management consulting firm.
