July 20: Purdue Day In Chicago

Purdue will take over the Windy City's Navy Pier. The pier will host 90 booths showcasing the university with a mix of information and entertainment. WGN farm broadcaster Max Armstrong, a Purdue alumnus, will be master of ceremonies, and Purdue President Martin C. Jischke will speak about the university's goals. Dale Whittaker, the new associate dean of agriculture and academic programs, will present School of Agriculture academic information sessions at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. School of Agriculture activities include: a turf grass display, cockroach racing and insect petting zoo, soil and crop experiments for children, a computerized golf game with prizes from the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex and the Turfgrass Science Program, as well as displays on Purdue landscape projects in the Chicago area, the Executive MBA in Food and Agribusiness, and video presentations of a "student's-eye view" of the Purdue campus. All Purdue activities are free, but fees for parking and other Navy Pier attractions apply. July 25-27: 2002 Indy International Wine Competition

Amateur winemakers and commercial fruit winemakers from around the world will send their best wines to compete at the Indy International Wine Competition. Fifty wine judges will travel to Indianapolis from throughout the United States and Canada to taste, analyze and score the various wines. Judging will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Trophies for the commercial wine class include best of show, best white wine and best red wine. A new Pacesetter trophy will be awarded to the winery winning the most medals at the competition. The event will be in the Exposition Hall at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, Indianapolis. The competition is open to public viewing. For more information, go to the Wineries of Indiana web site. August 7-18: Indiana State Fair

The 146th annual Indiana State Fair has something to offer for all ages. Some of the events for this year include daily 4-H and livestock exhibits, musical artists, educational interactive areas for children, old-time farming demonstrations in the Pioneer Village, blue ribbon horse pulls and the Indiana State Fair Queen Pageant. Tickets for the fair are $6 and children under five years old get in free. Entertainment event tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster. For more information, contact Ticketmaster at (317) 927-1482. No exchanges, no refunds rain or shine. Gates to the fair open at 6 a.m., and parking is free when available. Additional $3 parking can be found on the old IUPUI property across from the 38th Street Main Gate. Free parking also is available at the Indiana School for the Deaf on 42nd Street. August 14: Purdue Day At Indiana State Fair

The Indiana State Fairgrounds will be alive with Boilermaker spirit during Purdue Day. Tents housing exhibits from a majority of the university's schools will line much of Main Street. Other activities will include a meet and greet with Jerry Ross, astronaut and Purdue alumnus. Cricket spitting qualifications and spit-off also will be held. An evening parade around the fairgrounds will feature the two Boilermaker Specials, Purdue police car, chemistry van and fire truck. The cheerleaders and Purduettes also will participate.
