July 2, 2002 Agriculture school to participate in Purdue Day in ChicagoWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The School of Agriculture will highlight agricultural interests for the urban audience when Purdue University takes over the Windy City's Navy Pier on Saturday, July 20. Purdue Day in Chicago will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Exhibition Hall B, near the amusement park located at 600 E. Grand Ave. All Purdue activities are free, but there is a charge for parking and other Navy Pier attractions. The School of Agriculture will have 12 booths featuring a mix of information and entertainment. "We want to show people many of the things about agriculture that are relevant to urban populations," said Donya Lester, executive secretary of the Purdue Agricultural Alumni Association. "From business programs to landscaping and insects, folks will get to see some of the breadth of Purdue agriculture." The School of Agriculture will showcase programs including: • A computerized golf game with prizes from the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex and the turfgrass science program. • Cockroach racing and insect petting zoo. • Displays of Purdue landscape architecture student projects in the Chicago area. • Soil and crop experiments for children. • Garden TIPS: electronic horticulture information for urban gardening enthusiasts. Purdue Day at Navy Pier will include 85 booths showcasing the entire university. WGN farm broadcaster Max Armstrong, a Purdue alum, will be master of ceremonies and university President Martin C. Jischke will speak about the university's goals. Students who want to learn more about academic programs in the School of Agriculture may attend presentations by new associate dean and director of academic programs Dale Whittaker. He will give talks at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Information on the Executive MBA in Food and Agribusiness also will be available. There also will be video presentations showing a "student's eye view" of the Purdue campus. More information is available on the Web.
