Prophetstown Park to be site of insect programs

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Two separate events at Prophetstown State Park will allow the general public to have fun and learn more about bugs and butterflies.

Both events are free and will be at the park near Battle Ground, Ind., on Saturday, July 6.

From 2:30-5:30 p.m. the public is encouraged to participate in a census of butterflies. Tom Turpin, Purdue University professor of entomology, will lead participants in a walk through the park to record the types and numbers of butterflies they see. No training or advance registration is required, but it would be helpful if participants came with butterfly identification guides.

Later that evening, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Arwin Provonsha, curator of the Purdue entomology collection, will give an informational program on fireflies. The event will be in the Gibson Farm House at the park. Visitors who bring their own jars will get the chance to collect fireflies.

The programs are sponsored by Purdue's Department of Entomology and the Museums at Prophetstown.
