Purdue workbook on personal finance available in Spanish

WEST LAFAYETTE – A popular Purdue Extension financial education workbook now is available in Spanish.

The 42-page workbook, "Haciendo Trabajar Su Dinero" ("Making Your Money Work"), helps participants figure out where their money is going and how to gain more control over expenses. It teaches the difference between "needs" and "wants," and how to create a monthly spending (and saving) plan. Some other topics are:

• How to save a dollar when you think you don’t have a dime to spare.
• How to set goals.
• How your mood affects your money.
• How to make sure you get what you pay for.
• How to repay debts.
• Which important papers you should keep.

The English-language version of the workbook debuted early in 1998. The authors are Rebecca Haynes, Purdue Extension educator in Marion County and Alma Owen, formerly an Extension specialist in family resource management at Purdue University. After selling more than 1,000 copies of the workbook, the authors decided to produce a Spanish version.

The translation and layout were done by The Spanish Connection in Indianapolis. Bank One paid for the translation and production costs.

The workbook is part of program designed to be presented by a trained facilitator. A home-study alternative to the classroom presentation also is available in English on videotape. For details about whether the program is available in your area, contact the Purdue Extension office in your county.
