Weeks: 7/09/02 - 7/25/02 For additional information, call (765) 494-8396 July 9: Purdue weed day This self-guided tour will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Purdue University Agronomy Research Center on U.S. The tour will focus primarily on weeds in corn and soybeans, but weeds in popcorn also will be discussed. Purdue weed specialists will be available to answer questions regarding weed management systems and crop tolerance. The tour is free and open to the public. July 9-10: State farm management tour The 70th annual Farm Management Tour will travel to Johnson and Shelby counties to visit five of the best-managed farms in Indiana. The tour travels to different areas of the state each year to showcase top-performing farms. This year, the farms on the tour range from a state-of-the-art dairy to a farm that has incorporated off-farm enterprises into its operation. Due to the risk of spreading foot and mouth disease, anyone who has traveled out of the country the week prior is asked not to attend the tour. Participants will have the opportunity to join the Indiana Farm Management Association at each stop for a $10 fee. July 11-13: First Heartland apicultural society conference This is a new association designed to help beginning and experienced beekeepers meet people with similar interests and learn more about beekeeping. The conference will be at Goshen College, Goshen, Ind. Workshops, presentations, demonstrations and talks covering more than 40 topics related to beekeeping will be offered. Fees are $45 for three days or $20 per day. Those attending the conference may stay in residence halls at Goshen College. Single rooms are $25 a night and $40 a night for a double room. July 25-27: 2002 Indy international wine competition Amateur winemakers and commercial fruit winemakers from around the world will send their best wines to compete at the Indy International Wine Competition. Fifty wine judges will travel to Indianapolis from throughout the United States and Canada to taste, analyze and score the various wines. Judging will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Trophies for the commercial wine class include best of show, best white wine and best red wine. A new Pacesetter trophy will be awarded to the winery winning the most medals at the competition. The event will be in the Exposition Hall at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, Indianapolis. The competition is open to public viewing. For more information, go to https://www.indianawines.org.
