School of Liberal Arts honors outstanding seniorsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Twelve Purdue University students recently were recognized as outstanding seniors in the School of Liberal Arts at the Distinguished Alumni and Outstanding Seniors Banquet.The students are: • Emily Durnil , a speech, language and hearing major from Washington, Ind. Durnil served as the Purdue NSSLHA president and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Phi Sigma Pi National Honors Fraternity. She earned dean's list distinction and received the Purdue Valedictorian Scholarship. Durnil also worked with the YWCA Domestic Violence Prevention Program, participated in the Adopt-A Grandparent program at Washington Eastgate Nursing Center, worked with children in peer education programs and tutored children in second grade and high school. • Linda K. Bogan, a public relations major from West Lafayette, Ind. Bogan served on the Communication Department Head Search Committee and was president of the Purdue chapter of the Lambda Phi Eta National Communication Honor Society. She also received the Kneal Award for Best Journalism, was a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, Phi Eta Sigma and Alpha Lambda Delta, and was selected as a Thayer Scholar. She is an active member in the Klondike School PTO and Athletic Boosters, Klondike summer recreation program, and the West Side Community Church. • Ching Lynn Phua, an economics and industrial engineering major from Singapore. Ching earned dean's list and semester honors every semester during her college career. In addition, she was awarded the Society of Women Engineers scholarships in 2000, 2001 and 2002. She participated in several extracurricular activities including Purdue Singapore Students Association, the Steering Committee for Singaporean Students in USA, Executive Committee for Experiences 2000, the Purdue Repertory Dance Company and the Skydiving Club. • Negin Almassi, a biology and French major from Brookfield, Wisc. Almassi was the winner of the Undergraduate Foreign Languages and Literatures Award. She also was named the outstanding undergraduate student in the French department, won the association of women students VIP Award in political involvement, was a Steven C. Beering Scholar, and achieved dean's list and semester honors throughout her academic career. Currently, Almassi is studying abroad and working with Afghan refugees for the Refugee and Migrant Service in Christchurch, New Zealand. Upon her return, she will pursue an advanced degree in resource policy and behavior. • Barbara "Buffy" Feinstein, a health promotion major from Asheville, N.C. Feinstein was a member of Eta Sigma Gamma Health National Honor Society. She also earned dean's list and semester honors throughout her college career. She served as a student volunteer for the Purdue Recreational Center, a Spanish tutor and studied abroad in Mexico. She was winner of the Lifeguard of the Year Award and Team Player Award at Adler Pool. • Gina Neimi, a history major from Las Vegas. Neimi won the Certificate of Superior Achievement in History in 2001, earned honors and dean's list distinction for six semesters, won the PUCONTE Scholarship, received a Certificate of Achievement in History, and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Neimi has lived in Europe, on the Portuguese island of Terceira and in Finland. She currently holds a staff position at the Krannert School of Management and has been accepted into Purdue's graduate program in history to pursue a master's degree. • Nicholas Patrick Keisera, a video and film studies major from Chesterton, Ind. Keiser worked on projects at the Columbia Park Zoo and Big Brothers and Sisters Inc. in Lafayette, Ind. He also worked with the Elliott Hall of Music on the production of the "Joe Tiller Show" and Boiler Gold Rush. He served as program manager for the Purdue Telefund, in which he personally raised $175,000 for the university. • Benjamin S. Partridge, a philosophy major from Cincinnati, Ohio. Partridge was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and was a member of Purdue Students Against Sweatshops, Purdue Students for the Exploration and Development of Space, Purdue Environmental Action, Amnesty International, the Purdue Outing Club, Canterbury Tramping Club and Purdue Study Abroad, through which he is currently studying epistemology, ethics and philosophy in New Zealand. • Terri L. Towner, a political science major from Anderson, Ind. Towner earned semester honors for six semesters, dean's list distinction for seven semesters and was a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the Golden Key National Honor Society and Gamma Sigma Alpha. She also was a Lafayette Legal Aid volunteer, an officer of the Panhellenic Association, vice-chairman of the Purdue Student Government Finance Committee and a senator for Purdue Student Government. She was active in the Purdue Pre-Law Society, Pi Sigma Alpha, Delta Delta Delta Sorority and the Shreve Hall Judicial Board. Towner plans to pursue a law degree, focusing on state government and politics. • Kristen Sweat, a psychology major from West Lafayette, Ind. Sweat was a member of Phi Chi National Psychology Honor Society and served as vice president of its Purdue chapter. She also was inducted into the Golden Key International Honor Society and participated in the School of Liberal Arts Academic Honors Program. Sweat participated in the Purdue Repertory Dance Company, Purdue Christian Campus House, Mediation Services of Tippecanoe, the Psychology Club, the Harrison Hall Judicial Board, Purdue Student Government and Indiana 4-H. She will pursue a graduate degree in child and adolescent counseling and also is a candidate for Teach for America 2002. • Justin C. Glon, sociology and anthropology major from Mishawaka, Ind. Glon was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Kappa Delta, Alpha Lambda Delta, Phi Alpha Theta and the Golden Key National Honor Society. He also was a recipient of Class of 1937, Police and Firefighters, and South Bend FOP scholarships. He plans to pursue a law degree. • Mary Beth Woermbke, a fine art and art education major from Lafayette, Ind. Woermbke was a member of the Delta Phi Delta Fine Arts Club and the Golden Key National Honor Society. She also served as a private art instructor, a Super Saturday teaching assistant with the Gifted and Talented Resource Institute, was an undergraduate research trainee and has participated in Purdue National Art Education Association. Woermbke will pursue a graduate degree in fine arts.
