Farm Bill seminar Thursday (6/13) in Indianapolis

News reporters are invited to learn more about the 2002 Farm Bill and its implications for Indiana. An informational session will be from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday (6/13) at the Purdue Extension office in Marion County. The office is located at INTECH Ten Building, 6640 Intech Blvd., Suite 120, in Indianapolis. The presentation is targeted to leaders of Indiana's commodity groups, but news media are invited to attend and learn about the farm bill's new provisions. Purdue Extension agricultural economists Allan Gray and Steve Lovejoy will discuss decisions that farmers will need to make, consequences of the farm bill, new payment programs, and increased support for conservation and environmental efforts. For more information, contact Beth Forbes at (765) 494-2722 or forbes@purdue.edu. Photographers are welcome, and there will be an opportunity for one-on-one interviews following the session. INTECH Park is located on the northwest side of Indianapolis, on 71st Street between I-65 and I-465. More information on the 2002 Farm Bill, including Purdue news releases, is available.

Professor expert on corporate boards

John J. McConnell, a distinguished professor of finance at Purdue University's Krannert School of Management, has done research that indicates corporate board independence is good business and good management.

McConnell's work, published in finance journals, examined corporate board makeup and the effects of outside directors on corporations since the 1992 Cadbury Commission report. The commission recommended that boards of British corporations have at least three outside directors and different individuals in CEO and chairman positions.

He and co-researcher Jay Dahya found that boards dominated by outside directors were "more likely to fire their CEOs when performance is poor and more likely to hire outside CEOs when the current CEO is dismissed." And when outside directors were appointed, companies' stock prices went up. McConnell's current research explores whether the decisions of outside directors are better than those of companies with internal directors.

McConnell was recently featured on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer and Lou Dobbs' Moneyline after his Wall Street Journal op-ed on New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer's settlement with Merrill Lynch & Co.
