Purdue University welcomes state 4-H chorusWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – More than 100 teens from throughout Indiana are on Purdue University's West Lafayette campus until Wednesday (6/26) for the Indiana State 4-H Chorus Workshop.
Participants will learn about vocal performance and choral techniques in preparation for a performance at the 4-H Roundup at Purdue at 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, in Loeb Playhouse. They also will perform in the Farm Bureau Building at the Indiana State Fair on Saturday, Aug. 10. Brian Breed, Purdue Musical Organizations director, will facilitate the workshop. Breed says he looks forward to welcoming the young vocalists to Purdue. "PMO is proud to partner with the Cooperative Extension 4-H program," Breed says. "We value this outstanding relationship as we work with talented students from around the state spreading the wonderful traditions of 4-H and PMO. With this being the 100th anniversary of 4-H, we will have a special tribute to many familiar club and camp songs that a lot of Indiana citizens grew up singing." Pam Robbins, State 4-H Chorus coordinator, says the youth not only polish their performing skills at the workshop, but also mature as young adults while they reside with adult chaperones in a university residence hall. "It's an opportunity for youth to come and work at one of the great universities in Indiana with a nationally renowned choral director," Robbins says. "It's also an opportunity to experience some of the campus atmosphere. I am always amazed at how they come from so many musical backgrounds and experiences yet pull together to put on an outstanding concert by the end of the week. I call them a miracle choir." Robbins says the fact that more than half the workshop attendees have participated in the 4-H chorus before speaks well for the program. "One participant said she had never worked so hard, learned so much and had so much fun in her life as she did being a part of 4-H chorus," Robbins says. "These young people love music and performing. They know they are going to work hard while attending, and yet that is why we have so many come back. After all, there is nothing better than setting a goal, achieving it and doing it with a team. That is what 4-H chorus is all about." Members of the 4-H chorus are enrolled in eighth through 12th grade. They may participate in the chorus until they have completed 12th grade or reached the calendar year they turn 19 years old.
