Purdue offers life and career planning course

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University has designed a special fall semester course for people reluctant to enroll in college because they are unsure of what to study.

The three-credit hour course, Life and Career Planning (EDPS200X), will be offered on Mondays from 6-9 p.m. beginning Aug. 19.

Life and Career Planning is structured to help adult, non-traditional students explore life goals and potential professions. The students will participate in self-evaluation, objective assessment and decision-making process exercises. They also will explore educational and vocational opportunities.

The course is sponsored by the Span Plan Program in the Office of the Dean of Students and the Center for Lifelong Learning. The Span Plan Program serves the needs of older-than-average students currently enrolled at Purdue as well as the needs of prospective adult students who wish to attend the university. It provides academic, career and personal counseling to assist adult students in attaining career goals.

Dorothy Hughes, Span Plan counselor, says Life and Career Planning classes are designed to engage the students.

"The course is taught in interactional style and has a large personal growth component," Hughes says. "Students are required to share ideas during in-class group exercises designed to develop and simulate the interpersonal and presentation skills that will be required in the world of work."

Beginning students in need of financial assistance also are welcome to apply for a Span Plan grant, which pays the fee for one three-credit hour course for female part-time students. The deadline for fall grant applications is Monday, July 1.
