Weeks: 6/3/02 - 7/13/02 For additional information, call (765) 494-8396 June 3-5: Five State Beef InitiativeThe Five State Beef Initiative program allows producers to reap the benefits of value-added markets. During this three-day event, producers will be trained in the areas of health and beef quality, genetics, environmental stewardship, animal handling and well-being, and recordkeeping and data management. To receive certification, which lasts three years, producers must take a short test. Once certified, producers will be able to take part in special feeder calf sales in which the cattle will be sorted by color, breed and weight and sold in 50,000-pound semi load lots. June 13: Purdue Forage DayPurdue Forage Day will be at Milco Farms in Lewisville, Ind. Guests can take part in workshops with live equipment demonstrations and presentations covering the utilization and marketing of forages. Speakers from Ohio State and Purdue universities will cover the subjects of aeration effects, soil fertility, insects in forage crops and new technology innovations. Participants can also enter a bale of hay from their own field in the hay quality contest. Cored hay samples or forage samples not entered in the contest will be accepted for assessment, but a $10 fee will be charged. July 9-10: State Farm Management TourThe 70th annual Farm Management Tour will travel to Johnson and Shelby counties to visit five of the best-managed farms in Indiana. The tour travels to different areas of the state each year to showcase top-performing farms. This year, the farms on the tour range from a state-of-the-art dairy to a farm that has incorporated off-farm enterprises into its operation. Due to the risk of spreading foot and mouth disease, anyone who has traveled out of the country the week prior is asked not to attend the tour. Participants will have the opportunity to join the Indiana Farm Management Association at each stop for a $10 fee. July 11-13: First Heartland Apicultural Society ConferenceThis is a new association designed to help beginning and experienced beekeepers meet people with similar interests and learn more about beekeeping. The conference will be at Goshen College, Goshen, Ind. Workshops, presentations, demonstrations and talks for more than 40 topics related to beekeeping will be offered. Fees are $45 for three days or $20 per day. Those attending the conference may stay in residence halls at Goshen College. Single rooms are $25 a night and $40 a night for a double room.
