May 20, 2002 Veterinary school sculpture 'covers' national directoryWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A Purdue University campus landmark has made its way into the offices of veterinarians around the country courtesy of the American Veterinary Medical Association's directory and resource manual.
A photograph of the sculpture "Continuum" graces the cover of the 2002 directory, which lists AVMA members in the United States, Canada and other countries. "Continuum" was installed in front of Lynn Hall on the West Lafayette campus in 2000. Sculpted in bronze by Washington state artist Larry Anderson, it features seven distinct pieces, including a variety of life-sized animals and humans. One element depicts a cave wall 16 feet wide and 9 feet tall, with recessed, cutout images of prehistoric animals. Three of the pieces – a horse, a pig and a cat – show, in relief, their skeletal, circulatory and nervous systems, respectively. "This sculpture was designed to reflect the enduring relationship between people and animals," said Alan Rebar, dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine. "We're delighted that the AVMA chose to feature it on the cover of its directory this year." The directory is distributed to all AVMA members. Limited edition bronze miniatures of "Continuum," signed by the artist, are available for sale.
