Purdue Varsity Glee Club provides daily updates on China tour

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – For Purdue Varsity Glee Club supporters who could not join the vocalists on their international concert tour of China, the Glee Club offers the next best thing to being there – daily updates on the Internet.

Tour updates with photos and a daily journal from students and guests will be posted each day to PMO's Web site. A recent posting includes flight pictures, Summer Palace panoramas, Friendship Palace pictures and photos of Peking University.

The Glee Club is touring China through Monday, May 27. It will visit the cities of Beijing, Xian, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Concert stops include The Great Wall, Peking University, the Forbidden City Concert Hall, a Yangtze River cruise ship, the Shanghai Music Hall and the Academy of Performing Arts in Hong Kong. Purdue President Martin C. Jischke and his wife, Patty, will join the group in Hong Kong during the final leg of the tour for a farewell reception with Purdue alumni in China.

Purdue Musical Organizations director Brian Breed says the trip already has exceeded the group's expectations and promises to be even more memorable in the days ahead.

"Imagine the sounds of our voices ringing through the Three Gorges on our cruise along the Yangtze River, or returning to us off the centuries-old face of the Great Wall," Breed says. "There also will be plenty of time for quiet reflection while we gaze upon revolutionary turning points such as Tiananmen Square."

Breed says he is pleased that Glee Club supporters can share the group's experiences in such an interactive way.

"It's support from folks like those that visit our Web site that makes this kind of adventure possible for the young men and women who 'carry a green bough' in their hearts all year long," Breed says. "There's a Chinese proverb that says 'A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.' We invite people to take that first step with us."
