May 14, 2002 High school girls' camp explores engineering careers at Purdue WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Girls who are completing their freshman or sophomore year in high school have until May 30 to complete applications for a July summer camp at Purdue University that will help them explore careers in engineering and technology. The Purdue Women in Engineering Program will sponsor EDGE – Exciting Discovery for Girls in Engineering – a weeklong summer camp designed to expose high school girls to career paths in engineering and technology. The camp will take place July 14-19. Forty students will be selected based on information requested in an application. The application includes an essay question, and requires a recommendation from a math, science or computer teacher. The camp costs $350, which covers tuition, five nights in a Purdue residential hall, three meals a day, snacks, materials and supplies. The program seeks to highlight engineering as a career that lends itself to people with a wide variety of interests and talents and to encourage young women to pursue math and science in high school in order to prepare for higher education and a career in engineering. The schedule also is designed to give participants an understanding of the Schools of Engineering at Purdue. There will be laboratory tours in conjunction with experiments in various engineering areas. Each girl will construct a stereo tape player kit that they will take home. Lunches and dinners will be spent with current engineering students to learn more about student life on campus. From 5-8 p.m. Friday, July 19, participants and their families are invited to closing ceremonies, which will include dinner and student project presentations. The event will celebrate achievements attained during the week. Two complimentary guest tickets are provided, and other family members may purchase tickets to attend. High school girls interested in attending the EDGE camp must return entrance materials to the Purdue University Women in Engineering Program by May 30 for consideration.
