May 14, 2002 Lecture, events celebrate Purdue Nobel Laureate's 90th birthdayWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – More than 100 of Nobel Laureate Herbert C. Brown's former associates from around the world will assemble at Purdue May 22-25 for three days of lectures and seminars to celebrate the star chemist's 90th birthday. The three-day event will include a special symposium May 23-24, with former students of Brown's giving scientific talks on their current work. On Saturday, speakers from Caltech, Harvard University, the University of North Carolina and the University of Munich will talk on new scientific developments in organic chemistry as part of the 19th Herbert C. Brown Lecture Series. The program will conclude with observations and remarks from Brown, and a birthday banquet will cap the event. Brown is internationally recognized for his contributions to the field of synthetic organic chemistry. His research of boron compounds and their chemical reactions revolutionized the low-cost production of medicines and agricultural chemicals. In 1979 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Though retired since 1978, Brown continues his research and maintains an office in Purdue's Wetherill Laboratory of Chemistry. He and his wife, Sarah, actively support chemistry research at Purdue. In 1984, the couple established the lecture series to provide a forum for Purdue faculty and students interested in current topics in organic and borane chemistry. The series brings top chemists to campus to discuss new scientific developments that involve borane chemistry. Two years ago the Browns established a new research center at Purdue, called the Herbert C. Brown Center for Borane Research. The center focuses on boron compounds and their chemical reactions. Saturday's lecture series is open to the public and will begin at 9 a.m. in Stewart Center, Room 214. Further information on the lecture series is available from P.V.
