May 8, 2002 Girls explore high-tech careers at Love Engineering at Purdue camp WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Girls who have finished sixth and seventh grades have until May 30 to complete applications for a summer camp that will help them explore careers in engineering and technology. The third Love Engineering At Purdue, or LEAP, is a week-long summer camp designed to expose middle school girls to career paths in engineering and technology. Girls will participate in hands-on activities such as reconstructing a computer from its components, designing and programming a robot and constructing a personal Web page. The girls also will be able to view several laboratories on campus and tour a local industrial manufacturing facility. The program is offered by Purdue's Women in Engineering Program and sponsored by International Truck and Engine Corp. Camp runs July 8-12, and participants can choose a day-only or an on-site residential option. The day-only camp is from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day with a $125 fee. The residential option includes housing and food at McCutcheon Hall from Sunday, July 7, to the closing ceremonies on Friday, July 12. The residential option cost is $325, which includes additional activities for girls in the evening. A banquet for all the participants and their parents will be included in the camp fees. Scholarships are available for families in need of financial assistance. Applications consist of a completed form, a recommendation letter from a math or science teacher and a short essay from the student.
