E-biz center partners to review teaching-research on e-commerce

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Center for E-Business Education and Research (CEER) on May 7 will present Purdue University's across-the-curriculum efforts in e-business.

"Purdue has tremendous resources in e-business for companies," says Patrick J. Duparcq, a clinical professor of marketing who specializes in e-commerce issues at the Krannert School of Management.

"As a first point of contact, our Center for E-Business Education and Research can listen to what companies need and connect them to the right people at Purdue, whether they are at Krannert, the schools of engineering and technology, or the computer science department.

"We see our mission as connecting and inspiring companies, both in Indiana and nationally, to adopt cutting-edge thinking and technology in e-business."

CEER's all-day partners' meeting takes place in the Krannert Center Boardroom. Richard A. Cosier, Krannert School dean and Leeds Professor of Management, will welcome participants. Attendance at the partners' meeting is by invitation.

Reha Uzsoy, professor of industrial engineering, will review faculty research related to e-business.

Also on the docket are Krannert School professors and staff talking about e-commerce teaching and research initiatives: Duparcq on trends in e-business; Ananth Iyer, associate professor of operations management, on e-business in the MBA curriculum; and John Burr, CEER assistant director, who will talk about student efforts in advance of student project reviews at 10 a.m.

Joe Pekny, the director of the E-Enterprise Center at Purdue's Discovery Park and professor of chemical engineering, will present current ideas about Purdue's e-business direction.

CEER will be part of Discovery Park's E-Enterprise Center, which will pull together a myriad of related new-technology activities on the campus, with a special focus on three core areas where Purdue has, or can develop, national leadership. These areas are network security and reliability; management of distributed e-enterprises, including database systems; logistics and distribution of products; and marketing of e-enterprises.

Ned Howell, e-enterprise managing director at the E-Enterprise Center, will talk about current e-business activities on campus.

Cosier is director of Discovery Park's Burton C. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship, one of the four teaching-research centers at Purdue's $100 million park.

Krannert faculty members associated with CEER have begun projects and research on data supplied by IBM, Carrier Corp., Cisco Systems Inc., Whirlpool Corp., Ford Motor Co., DuPont & Co., Compuware and Telesight Inc.

On CEER's industry advisory board are representatives from IBM, United Technologies Corp., Cisco Systems Inc., Honeywell Inc., Siemens AG, Whirlpool Corp. and Ameritech. Funding for CEER was made possible by a gift from IBM.

John Burr, assistant director of CEER, says there are 12 centers that engage in e-business research on campus. "They divide into three types: fundamental research centers that develop online technologies for business, centers that develop application technologies for management and manufacturing, and those that engage in predictive simulations."

CEER also has an on-campus educational mission, Burr says. There are 14 electives in e-business offered by Krannert in its MBA program. There also are interdisciplinary offerings with other Purdue schools and departments, as well as e-business courses in Krannert's executive education programs.

CEER maintains a comprehensive Web site that lists centers on campus that do e-business research, national and international e-business news, corporate sponsorship information and an archive of news releases on Purdue e-business news.
