Todd Nelson, left, of Chesterland, Ohio, and Paul Schmidt of West Lafayette, both mechanical engineering seniors at Purdue University, work on a formula-style race car designed and built by a team of about 20 students during the spring semester. The customized car has a 600 cc engine and runs from 0 to 60 mph in about 3.5 seconds. Students will race the car in a national competition in Pontiac, Mich. in May. The students built their cars from scratch in rigorous senior-design classes – called "capstone" courses – which prepare them for jobs in corporate America. They worked under the supervision of mechanical engineer John Nolfi, manager of the university's Product Engineering and Realization Laboratory, and John Starkey, an associate professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering.
