15 earn honorary degrees from Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University will award 15 honorary doctoral degrees during May commencement ceremonies around the state.

Thirteen honorees will be recognized at Purdue's West Lafayette campus during four commencement ceremonies today (Friday, 5/10), Saturday (5/11) and Sunday (5/12) in Elliott Hall of Music. Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne will award an honorary doctorate on May 15, and Purdue North Central awarded an honorary doctorate during its May 7 commencement.

The 2002 recipients at the West Lafayette campus are:

Michael L. Eskew, Atlanta, Ga., chairman and chief executive officer for United Parcel Service. His doctor of engineering degree will be awarded at 8 p.m. Friday, May 10.

Thomas G. Gerding, Georgetown, Texas, president of Newform Development Laboratories Inc. His doctor of science degree will be awarded at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 11.

Darlene Clark Hine, East Lansing, Mich., professor of history at Michigan State University. Her doctor of letters degree will be awarded at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 11.

Wayne Thomas Hockmeyer, Bethesda, Md., founder and chairman of MedImmune Inc. His doctor of science degree will be awarded at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11.

Thomas J Malott (Note: no period after J), Alpharetta, Ga., former president and chief executive officer of Siemens Energy and Automation. His doctor of engineering degree will be awarded at 8 p.m. Friday, May 10.

J. Willard Marriott Jr., Bethesda, Md., chairman and chief executive officer of Marriott International Inc. His doctor of letters degree will be awarded at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11.

Sidney A. McNairy, Gaithersburg, Md., associate director of research infrastructure for the National Center for Research Resources in Bethesda, Md. His doctor of agricultural science degree will be awarded at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11.

Maurice Pensaert, Berlare, Belgium, professor of veterinary medicine at Ghent University, Belgium. His doctor of science degree will be awarded at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11.

Dale D. Reed, San Leandro, Calif., chairman, chief executive officer and half owner of Buran and Reed Inc., a scale manufacturing and distribution company. His doctor of agriculture degree will be awarded at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11.

Michael M. Sears, Lake Forest, Ill., senior vice president and chief financial officer of the Boeing Co. His doctor of engineering degree will be awarded at 8 p.m. Friday, May 10.

Jerry D. Semler, Indianapolis, chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer of American United Life Insurance Co. His doctor of management degree will be awarded at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, May 12.

Anna Pao Sohmen, Hong Kong, chairman of Starform Services Ltd. Her doctor of letters degree will be awarded at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 11.

Gary A. Sojka, Middleburg, Pa., former president of Bucknell University. His doctor of science degree will be awarded at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11.

At Purdue University North Central:

Eugene Russell Jaffe, Westville, Ind., senior partner Guarantee Associates. His doctor of management degree was awarded on Tuesday, May 7.

At Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne:

M. James Johnston, Fort Wayne, Ind., president of Northern Indiana Group, National City Bank. His doctor of letters degree will be awarded at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 15.
