IPS students bound for science at Spring Fest

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Double the number of Indianapolis Public School students who attend Purdue University to pursue careers in math and science. Make it educational, but make it fun.

That effort begins Saturday and Sunday (4/13-14) at Purdue's annual Spring Fest, where IPS students involved in Purdue's Science Bound program will participate in a variety of interactive science-related events and activities that will combine fun with hands-on learning.

A vital part of the Science Bound program will include on-site in-service sessions and activities for students and educators, as well as the residential summer camps scheduled to be held this June and July. Science Bound students will be registering for the summer camps while on campus this weekend.

Science Bound is a new partnership between Purdue and IPS, in which 50 seventh-grade students have been chosen to enter a five-year program designed attract and expose them to careers in engineering, science, math and technology. Special emphasis will be placed on attracting underrepresented students. After completing the program, students will be offered a full scholarship to Purdue, where they can choose to study a math or science major.

Components of the program will include field trips, demonstrations, and after-school and weekend programs, in addition to summer camps. Each student also will be assigned a mentor, and regular meetings will be held to ensure the students are succeeding.
